Who is Devon Mannix?

In his own words, the 19-year-old Fort McMurray resident declares himself a “Proud Canadian Nationalist. Defender of our inherent Anglo-Franco Identity.”

Mannix’s self-description is merely a thinly veiled euphemism for “White Nationalist.” Such racially coded language is present in the overwhelming majority of Mannix’s social media posts, both on his personal Facebook page and as a representative for the so-called Cultural Action Party. He repeatedly employs such terms as “Anglo-Franco Identity,” “Old Stock Canadian,” “European Christians,” “Euro-Canadians,” in conjunction with polemical screeds against “Multiculturalism,” “Third World,” “Migrants,” “Muslims,” “Refugees,” etc. Here are several examples demonstrating Mannix’s penchant for using such language:

According to Mannix, only those who discriminate against an identifiable group are “real” Canadians.

Mannix recently spoke at an anti-Islam protest in Calgary on June 3 on behalf of the Cultural Action Party. The rally was co-sponsored by the Canadian branch of WCAI (Worldwide Coalition Against Islam), Canadian Combat Coalition, and the National Advancement Party of Canada. Here are some highlights from Mannix’s speech:

  • Grossly misrepresenting a recent incident at a school in Red Deer involving Syrian refugees: “Islam and multiculturalism is killing our children – literally! Just a few months ago, in Red Deer, in our own province, the heartland of Canada, Syrian sewer rats were beating on our kids! They were beating on our kids in the name of Islam. Not Christianity, not Judaism; Islam! All the ills that face Canada right now are directly a result of Islam.”
  • Proclaiming some of the supposed tenets of the Cultural Action Party and rally goers as a whole: “We stand for freedom. We stand for equality. We stand for free speech.”
  • Just minutes later, Mannix goes on to blatantly contradict his own statement by pointing at a group of counter-protestors and declaring: “They are not our equals. We’re standing for real Canadians. Real people.”
  • Fearmongering with over-the-top hyperbole: “We must change the very fabric of this country. The whole ‘tolerant, left wing attitude’ that we have is literally going to kill us.”
  • In another direct contradiction, Mannix seems to virtually undermine the entire basis of his speech: “European-Christian identity and heritage will never die. Guess what Islam will do to it? Nothing. They can’t do anything.”
  • Mannix has apparently granted himself the authority to decide who is a “real” human being and who is not: “I’m only 19 years old, I’m from Fort McMurray, you know it’s a blue collar town. We’re the real people over here. We’re the real people.”
  • Mannix’s worldview is encapsulated quite nicely in the finale of his speech: “We’re not going to stand idly by while our country gets raped. No longer, no longer will we stand by while our country is flooded with the third world, with disease-ridden immigrants. We will maintain our Christian values. We will maintain our European Heritage no matter what, because we are Canadians. We are proud Anglophone, Francophone Canadians, and we will stand for our heritage! We will stand for our values! And we will stand for our freedom!”

There are a number of common threads running through and linking many of the far-right groups that have recently cropped up across Canada’s social media landscape. For the most part, the dominant rhetoric coming from these online reactionary groups is centered around their staunch opposition to Justin Trudeau and the religion of Islam. However, there is a distinction between Mannix and the Cultural Action Party and other far-right groups that is worth noting; their focus is not only relegated to what they stand against, but also what they stand for: White Nationalism.

Founder of the Cultural Action Party, Brad Salzberg, is a contributing writer for the Council of European Canadians. The Council describe themselves as “a group of public-minded individuals who believe the European heritage and character of Canada should be maintained and enhanced.” So, in other words, they are a white nationalist think tank. Numerous columns written by Council of European Canadians’ contributors can be found on The Daily Stormer, a popular neo-nazi website (http://www.dailystormer.com/?s=Council+of+European+Canadians). Notably, the council has also received high praise from the likes of Kevin MacDonald, a prominent American anti-Semite and white supremacist (http://www.dailystormer.com/council-of-european-canadians-an-excellent-website-in-defense-of-the-people-and-culture-of-the-west/). The Council’s name popped up in the news late last year when then-candidate for leadership of the Conservative Party of Canada, Kellie Leitch, rejected an endorsement from a contributor from the Council named Frank Hilliard (http://news.vice.com/story/part-of-canadas-so-called-alt-right-is-endorsing-kellie-leitch). Mannix, a keen supporter of Leitch, must have been crushed.

The language Mannix employs in many of his social media posts echoes much of what can be read on overtly racist sites The Occidental Observer and The Daily Stormer. In addition to his racially coded rhetoric, there are numerous markers on Mannix’s social media accounts connecting him to various White Supremacists and Neo-Nazis. For example:

Pictured in a screen shot of Mannix’s “Likes” on his Facebook page:

  • Identity Evropa: “A white nationalist group in the United States, established in March 2016. Part of the broader white nationalist “alt-right” movement, the group is identified as a white supremacist organization by the Anti-Defamation League and is designated by the Southern Poverty Law Center as a hate group.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identity_Evropa
  • Nathan Damigo: The founder of Identity Evropa. Earlier this year, Damigo rose to fame after sucker punching a woman in the face at a protest in Berkeley. http://www.alternet.org/activism/white-supremacist-caught-video-sucker-punching-woman-berkeley-protester-faces-calls-arrest
  • David Duke: “An American white nationalist, politician, anti-Semitic conspiracy theorist, Holocaust denier, convicted felon, and former Imperial Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Duke
  • Traditionalist Worker Party: “The Traditionalist Worker Party is a white nationalist group that advocates for racially pure nations and communities and blames Jews for many of the world’s problems. Even as it claims to oppose racism, saying every race deserves its own lands and culture, the group is intimately allied with neo-Nazi and other hardline racist organizations that espouse unvarnished white supremacist views.” http://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/group/traditionalist-worker-party
  • National Policy Institute: A white nationalist organization founded by Richard Spencer. http://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/individual/richard-bertrand-spencer-0
  • American Freedom Party: “A political party initially established by racist Southern California skinheads that aims to deport immigrants and return the United States to white rule.” http://www.splcenter.org/fighting-hate/extremist-files/group/american-freedom-party
  • Other “Likes” on Mannix’s page include: League of the South (a white supremacist, neo-confederate hate group), Mike Cernovich (“alt-lite” provocateur; rape apologist), Bashar al-Assad (President of Syria; currently presiding over the brutal slaughter of his country’s own citizens), ACT for America (virulently anti-Muslim organization), Milo Yiannopoulos (“alt-lite” troll; pederasty apologist), InfoWars/Alex Jones (notorious far-right conspiracy theorist), Breitbart (far-right propaganda and fake news outlet; self-proclaimed “platform for the alt-right”), and many, many more.

Additionally, Mannix “Follows” far-right luminaries such as Paul Joseph Watson (InfoWars conspiracy theorist), Gavin McInnes (founder of the alt-right group “Proud Boys”), Richard Spencer (white supremacist who founded alternativeright.com; coined the term “alt-right”), and Kyle Chapman (became an instant “alt-right celebrity” after smashing a wooden dowel over a counter-protestor’s head), among others.

Mannix is also “Friends” on Facebook with the likes of notorious white supremacist Paul Fromm and racist men’s rights activist/rape apologist Matt Forney.

Here are a couple of Mannix’s own Facebook posts demonstrating his advocacy for white supremacy:

-These monuments are not simply Confederate symbols; they are symbols of slavery. Yet, curiously, it is not slavery that Mannix condemns as a “crime against humanity.” Nope. According to Mannix, the crime against humanity is the removal of emblems of America’s era of enslavement.

-Even back in 2012, Mannix was tweeting out links to Hitler speeches.

Make no mistake about it: Devon Mannix and the Cultural Action Party represent white nationalism. Mannix is a racist and a bigot. His discriminatory worldview does not make him a “real” Canadian, and he for damn sure does not possess a shred of authority to decide who is and who is not a “real” Canadian.
